A PTA approved phone is registered with the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority and works on every Pakistani network with any SIM. A non PTA phone is not registered, so a Pakistani SIM will stop working in it after a grace period, and it mostly ends up used on Wi-Fi only. That single difference explains why the same model can have two very different prices in Pakistan. Around it sit terms that confuse many buyers — patch approved, CPID, JV and factory unlocked. This guide explains each one in plain words, so you know exactly what you are paying for before you buy a used mobile.
1. What PTA approved means
Every mobile phone used on a Pakistani network is checked against the PTA's Device Identification, Registration and Blocking System (DIRBS). A phone whose IMEI is registered in that system is "PTA approved" (also called compliant). It works with any SIM, on any network, for calls, SMS and mobile data.
Phones sold officially in Pakistan are registered already. A phone brought from abroad becomes PTA approved when it is registered and the applicable tax and duty are paid.
2. What non PTA means
A non PTA phone has a valid IMEI that has not been registered in Pakistan. According to the PTA, a device like this that appears on a Pakistani network for the first time must be registered within 60 days, otherwise it is blocked from all networks — no calls, SMS or mobile data. Overseas Pakistanis and visitors have their own allowances, but for a phone bought locally, the practical rule is simple: unregistered means it will not keep working with a SIM.
That is why non PTA phones, especially iPhones, are much cheaper. Many people use them with Wi-Fi only, or with an eSIM where that works — but you should buy one knowing exactly that.

3. Patch approved and CPID phones — the risky middle
A "patch approved" (also sold as "VIP patch") phone is a non PTA phone whose IMEI has been changed in software to copy the IMEI of another, already registered phone — often a cheaper model. It then shows up on the network as approved. "CPID" or "server approved" phones use similar tricks.
These phones can work for months and then stop without warning if the copied IMEI is blocked. Changing an IMEI is illegal in Pakistan, and PTA has repeatedly warned that patched phones can be blocked and their users penalised. Banking apps and some services may also not work properly on them.

If the IMEI shown by dialling *#06# does not match the box, or the seller calls the phone "patch", "VIP" or "CPID approved", walk away. The saving is not worth a phone that can die on the network any day.
4. JV iPhones
In Pakistan, a "JV" iPhone is a carrier-locked iPhone — originally sold by a network abroad and locked to that network — that is made to work with a local SIM using a thin chip placed under the SIM card. The name is widely linked to the "Gevey" chip.
JV iPhones are cheap for a reason: they cannot be PTA approved in that state, the SIM chip can stop working after an iOS update, and calls, data and OTP messages can be unreliable. They can be fine as a Wi-Fi device, but they are a poor choice as your main phone.
5. Factory unlocked (FU)
"Factory unlocked" (often shortened to FU) means the phone was sold without any network lock, so it accepts any SIM. That is good — but FU says nothing about PTA status. A factory unlocked phone can be PTA approved or non PTA.
So when a listing says "FU", always ask the second question: is it PTA approved, and what does the IMEI check show?

7. Which one should you buy?
If the phone will be your main phone — calls, WhatsApp on the go, bank OTPs, ride apps — buy PTA approved. It costs more, but it is the only type that is certain to keep working with your SIM and to resell easily.
If you only need a device for Wi-Fi at home (a child's phone, a second phone for social media, a camera), a genuine non PTA phone can be good value, as long as you know that is what you are getting. Avoid patched and JV phones in both cases.
