In Punjab, each district administration sets up official cattle mandis before Eid and publishes their locations and timings, and many towns also hold regular weekly animal markets. Check your district's announcements for that year rather than last year's list, because locations change.
How to buy a bakra for qurbani
A calm plan saves money and stress.
- Set a budget first, including transport, feed and a few days of care.
- Go early in the season for more choice, or late for lower prices — with less choice.
- Walk the mandi and compare several animals before bargaining.
- Check the teeth — many buyers look for a goat with two permanent front teeth (do daant).
- Check health (see below) before agreeing a price.
- Agree delivery — many sellers will deliver for an extra charge.
How to check goat health
A healthy goat or sheep usually shows:
- Bright, alert eyes without discharge.
- A clean, cool, moist nose.
- A shiny coat without bald patches or sores.
- Steady walking with no limping.
- Normal, firm droppings — no diarrhoea.
- Interest in food and water.
- Normal breathing at rest — no coughing or panting.

What does a healthy goat look like?
Beyond the checklist, watch the animal for a few minutes. A healthy goat stands steadily, looks around, chews the cud when resting and reacts when you approach. A goat that stands apart from the rest, hangs its head or will not eat is often unwell.
Caring for the animal at home
For the days before Eid, give the animal shade, fresh water, clean bedding and the same feed it ate at the mandi. Keep it away from traffic and loud noise, and clean up daily. After Eid, follow your city's waste rules and use the official collection points.
