Markets in Islamabad and Rawalpindi: Bazaar Guide
The most famous markets in Islamabad are Jinnah Super (F-7), Super Market (F-6), Aabpara (G-6) and the weekly Itwar Bazar in H-9; in Rawalpindi they are Raja Bazar, Saddar, Moti Bazar and Bara Market. Islamabad's markets are planned, tidy sector markets, while Rawalpindi's are older, busier and usually cheaper. Here is what to buy where.
Famous markets in Islamabad
Every Islamabad sector has its own "markaz" market, but a few are known city-wide.
| Market | Sector | Known for |
|---|---|---|
| Jinnah Super | F-7 | Clothes, shoes, books, restaurants |
| Super Market | F-6 | Clothes, books, everyday shopping |
| Kohsar Market | F-6/3 | Cafรฉs and specialty shops |
| Aabpara Market | G-6 | One of the city's oldest markets; mobiles, clothes, household goods |
| Itwar Bazar | H-9 | Weekly bazaar โ fruit, vegetables, clothes, household goods |
| Blue Area and malls | Jinnah Avenue | Brands and big stores |
Jinnah Super Market Islamabad
Jinnah Super in F-7 is Islamabad's best-known shopping market: clothes and shoe shops, bookshops, tailors and some of the city's favourite restaurants, all around open walkways. It is a pleasant place to shop on foot, especially in the evening.
Aabpara Market and Itwar Bazar
Aabpara in G-6 is one of Islamabad's oldest markets, with mobile shops, clothes, fabric and household goods at more affordable prices than the F-sector markets. The H-9 Itwar Bazar (itwar means Sunday) is the city's big weekly bazaar for fruit, vegetables, clothes, shoes and household items at low prices; its days have changed over the years, so check before you go.
Rawalpindi famous bazaar: Raja Bazar
Raja Bazar is the heart of old Rawalpindi โ a dense network of streets around Fawara Chowk where you can buy almost anything, often at wholesale prices: cloth, clothes, utensils, spices, dry fruit, cosmetics and household goods. It is crowded and chaotic, and the cheapest place in the twin cities for many things.
Saddar Rawalpindi, Moti Bazar and Bara Market
Each of Rawalpindi's other big markets has its own speciality.
- Saddar Rawalpindi โ the Cantt shopping area around Bank Road and Kashmir Road: clothes, shoes, electronics and food.
- Moti Bazar โ the go-to for women: party and fancy dresses, bridal shopping, cosmetics and artificial jewellery.
- Bara Market โ imported goods, crockery, cosmetics and household items.
- Commercial Market (Satellite Town) โ everyday shopping and food.
- College Road โ known for its pet and bird market; see Birds Market in Pakistan: Karachi, Lahore, Pindi.
Shopping tips for the twin cities
Islamabad and Rawalpindi are close, but traffic between them can be slow.
- Use the Metro Bus between Saddar Rawalpindi and Islamabad to skip parking.
- Go to Raja Bazar and Moti Bazar in the morning.
- Compare prices โ the same item is often cheaper in Pindi.
- Keep your phone and wallet secure in crowded bazaars.
โ ๏ธ Careful here
Market timings in Pakistan change โ city governments set closing times, many markets close one day a week, and Ramadan and Eid change everything. Check the day before you go (a quick call to a shop you know works best), rather than relying on a timing printed online.
