To check a used laptop before buying, look at the battery health report, the health of the hard drive or SSD, the screen for dead pixels, every key on the keyboard, all the ports, the charger, and make sure there is no BIOS or account password you cannot remove. Used laptops are the second most searched used electronic in Pakistan after mobiles — students and freelancers buy them to get more RAM and a better processor for their budget. The problems that cost most are the ones you cannot see from the outside, so this checklist focuses on those.
1. Confirm the specifications
Don't rely on the sticker or the listing. On Windows, open Settings → System → About to see the processor and RAM, and File Explorer → This PC for the storage size. On a Mac, use the Apple menu → About This Mac.
Check the processor generation, not just "Core i5" or "Core i7" — an older generation i7 can be slower than a newer i5. The same goes for the exact MacBook model and chip.
2. Battery health: the free report on Windows
Windows can create a battery report for you. Open Command Prompt and type powercfg /batteryreport, then open the file it saves. Compare the "Design capacity" with the "Full charge capacity" — the further apart they are, the more the battery has worn. The report also shows the cycle count on many laptops.
On a MacBook, hold the Option key, click the Apple menu and choose System Information → Power to see the cycle count and condition.

Unplug the charger and use the laptop on battery for a while during your test. A laptop that dies quickly off the charger needs a new battery, and that should come off the price.
3. Storage health
A failing hard drive or SSD can take your files with it. On Windows, a free tool such as CrystalDiskInfo shows the drive's health status in seconds; "Good" is what you want. Also check whether the laptop has an SSD or an older hard drive — an SSD makes a huge difference to speed and is worth paying a little more for.
4. Screen, keyboard, touchpad and body
Walk through the physical checks with the laptop open in front of you.
- Open a plain white and a plain black image full screen to look for dead pixels, lines, bright spots and uneven backlight.
- Open a notes app and type every key, including the number row, space bar and function keys.
- Test the touchpad: movement, clicks, two-finger scrolling.
- Open and close the lid slowly — loose or cracked hinges are a common and costly problem.
- Look for missing screws, cracks around the hinges and signs the bottom panel has been forced open.
- Test the webcam, microphone and speakers in a quick video call.
5. Ports, charger and Wi-Fi
Plug something into every USB port, test the HDMI port if there is one, and check the headphone jack. Connect to Wi-Fi and Bluetooth.
Check the charger is the right one for the laptop and that the laptop actually charges from it. Unofficial chargers are common and can damage the battery over time.
6. Passwords and locks
Restart the laptop and watch for a password prompt before Windows loads — that is a BIOS password, and without it you may not be able to change settings or reinstall Windows. Ask the seller to remove it in front of you.
The laptop should also be signed out of the seller's Microsoft account or Apple ID and, ideally, freshly reset. On a MacBook, make sure Find My Mac is off, and ask whether it was ever part of a company's managed devices — a company lock (MDM) can come back after a reset.

A used MacBook still linked to someone's Apple ID or a company's management system is not usable long term. Don't buy it until the lock is removed in front of you.
7. Performance test
Open several browser tabs, a video and the apps you will actually use. Watch for freezing, loud fans and heat. A laptop that runs hot and loud when doing little may need cleaning and new thermal paste — or it may have a bigger problem.
8. Used, refurbished and the price
Refurbished means the laptop has been repaired or restored before being sold again. It can be good value, but ask who refurbished it, which parts were changed and whether there is any warranty.
Compare the asking price with other laptops of the same model, processor generation, RAM, storage type and battery condition. Used laptop prices in Pakistan vary widely with these details.
9. Paying safely
Pay only after testing, and keep the seller's messages and any receipt.
