Guides & JournalBalochi Dress for Men: Shalwar, Pagg and Chappal
The traditional Balochi dress for men is a long, loose kameez with long sleeves and a very wide shalwar that uses several metres of fabric, usually topped with an embroidered waistcoat, a white turban called the pagg, and leather chappal. Some men wear a round embroidered Balochi topi instead of, or under, the pagg. Here's each piece, what to wear for weddings, and what to check when buying.
The Balochi shalwar kameez
The Balochi shalwar is famous for its width โ it is far wider and baggier than a regular shalwar, gathered at the waist and falling in deep folds. The kameez is long and loose with long sleeves. White and light colours are common, especially in hot weather, but darker colours are worn too. Some Balochi shalwars also have embroidered cuffs.
The embroidered waistcoat
A waistcoat worn over the kameez is where men's outfits often show Balochi embroidery and mirror work. It dresses up a simple shalwar kameez for events and Baloch Culture Day.
The pagg (Balochi pagri)
The pagg is the Baloch turban โ a long piece of cloth, often white, wrapped around the head. It is a symbol of honour and dignity, worn by elders every day and by many men at weddings and cultural events. Tying a pagg takes practice; many people learn from an elder or buy a ready-tied one.
The Balochi topi
The Balochi topi is a round cap, often richly embroidered with mirror work. Historically, finely hand-embroidered caps were a mark of status โ the chakan doz cap was traditionally associated with nobles. Today topis come in many designs and colours, from simple black to heavily embroidered, including versions for girls.
Balochi chappal
Leather Balochi chappal complete the outfit. They are made in many styles for men and ladies, and handmade leather pairs are sold widely in Quetta and Karachi. Check the stitching, sole grip and fit before buying.
Balochi wedding dress for men
For weddings, grooms and guests usually wear a crisp new shalwar kameez, a heavily embroidered waistcoat, a pagg and new chappal. The wedding is also where chaap is danced โ see Baloch Culture Day (2 March): Dress and Traditions.
