Product Photography With Your Phone
You do not need a studio or a DSLR. Everything here works with a phone, a window and things already in your home β from the light setup professionals use to photographing shiny jewellery and dark fabric.
Lesson 1 Β· 8 min
The Phone Photography Formula
You do not need a DSLR camera. You need good light, a clean background, and the right angle. A modern smartphone is enough to take photos that compete with any professional listing.
The golden rule: natural light always wins
Your shooting setup (cost: Rs 0β500)
Background options
Position your product
The 4 essential shots every listing needs
Editing (free apps)
Common mistakes
β Flash on (creates flat, harsh look)
β Cluttered background (distracts from product)
β Portrait orientation (use landscape or square)
β Photo taken at night under yellow bulb
β Watermarks over the product
Your action
Reshoot your hero image for your top listing using natural window light and a white background. Compare the before and after β the difference will be immediate.
Lesson 2 Β· 5 min
Light β The Free Superpower
The difference between an amateur photo and a professional one is rarely the camera. It is the light β and the best light in Pakistan is free.
The golden setup
A window with indirect daylight (no direct sun stripes), product placed at 45Β° to it, white sheet or foam board on the shadow side to bounce light back. That is 80% of professional product photography.
Times that work
Mid-morning and late afternoon give soft, warm light. Harsh 1pm sun through a window creates hard shadows β diffuse it with a thin white curtain and it becomes a softbox.
What to avoid
Do this today
Reshoot ONE product at the window with a white-sheet bounce. Compare with your old photo side by side β this five-minute test converts every seller into a light believer.
Lesson 3 Β· 5 min
Backgrounds & Styling on a Rs 0 Budget
You do not need a studio. You need surfaces and 3 props β most already in your home.
Backgrounds that always work
The 3-prop rule
One plant sprig, one complementary object (book, cup, ribbon), one texture. More than 3 props and the buyer's eye loses the PRODUCT. Props support; they never compete.
Consistency = brand
Pick ONE background style for your main shots across the whole store. When your grid looks consistent, your store looks like a brand β and brands charge more.
Do this today
Build one background kit: chart paper + one texture + 3 props in a box. Every future shoot starts in 2 minutes instead of 20.
Lesson 4 Β· 5 min
The 5-Shot Formula Every Product Needs
Buyers flick through photos asking different questions. Answer all five and doubt has nowhere to live.
The formula
Order matters
Hero first ALWAYS β it is what shows on cards across dapxop (homepage, search, category, ads). The better your hero, the cheaper every ad click becomes, because more people click.
Do this today
Audit your best seller against the formula. Shoot whichever of the 5 is missing β usually scale, and scale is the review-saver.
Lesson 5 Β· 4 min
Phone Camera Settings That Actually Matter
Any phone from the last five years can shoot sellable photos β if you stop the phone from sabotaging you.
Set once, benefit forever
Stability
Elbows on the table, or a Rs 300 tripod. Half your "bad camera" is actually shake.
Do this today
Do the settings pass on your phone (2 minutes). Reshoot one hero photo with focus-tap + slight underexposure and compare.
Lesson 6 Β· 5 min
Editing in 5 Minutes β Free Apps, Real Results
Editing is seasoning, not surgery. The goal: make the photo look like the product looks in good light β never "better than real" (that earns returns).
The 6-step edit (Snapseed / phone editor β free)
Total: five minutes once you have done it thrice.
The one rule
Colour accuracy is sacred. If the edit shifts your emerald green toward teal, undo. "Colour different from photo" is a top-3 complaint on every marketplace β accuracy protects your rating.
Batch it
Edit all photos from a shoot in one sitting with the same adjustments β consistency across the store is a brand asset.
Do this today
Install a free editor, run the 6 steps on one hero image, upload, and enjoy the upgrade.
Lesson 7 Β· 5 min
Lifestyle Shots β Selling the Feeling
A product photo says what it IS. A lifestyle photo says what life LOOKS like with it β and feelings buy.
Cheap lifestyle setups
Composition tip
Keep the product biggest and sharpest in frame; let context blur gently behind. Portrait mode is your friend here.
Where lifestyle shots earn extra
They shine as your second or third photo, in ads (cards with lifestyle heroes often out-click plain ones for emotional categories), and on Instagram feeding your dapxop store.
Do this today
Create one gift-moment shot of your best product: wrap, ribbon, natural light, done. Add it to the listing and to your next campaign.
Lesson 8 Β· 5 min
Photographing Tricky Products β Shiny, Dark & Tiny
Some products fight the camera. Each has a known fix.
Shiny (jewellery, metallics, glass)
The enemy is reflections of the room and you. Shoot inside a diffused light zone (white sheet tent around the product), camera through a small gap. No direct light source visible to the surface.
Dark products (black fabric, dark wood)
Cameras underexpose them into detail-less blobs. Use MORE light than usual, a light background for contrast, and raise exposure until texture appears β then a touch of sharpening in edit.
Tiny products (rings, charms, buttons)
Get close but respect your phone's focus limit (usually ~8cm). Use scale props (a coin, a fingertip), and crop in editing rather than zooming. A plain background is essential β tiny products drown in busy scenes.
Do this today
Identify your trickiest product and apply its fix. These categories are exactly where better photos beat 90% of competitors, because most sellers never learn the fix.
Lesson 9 Β· 5 min
Creating a Consistent Visual Identity
When a buyer browses dapxop, they see a grid of product thumbnails. If your thumbnails all look different β different backgrounds, different lighting β your store looks inconsistent and untrustworthy.
What visual consistency means
All your listing photos should look like they belong to the same brand. Same background style, same lighting temperature, same photo treatment.
Choose your aesthetic (pick one)
Clean & Minimal
White or off-white backgrounds, no props, product front and centre. Best for: bags, jewellery, clothing.
Warm & Earthy
Wooden surfaces, dried flowers, linen fabric as background. Best for: candles, home decor, natural products.
Lifestyle & Contextual
Photos with a human element β product being used or worn. Best for: clothing, accessories, gifting products.
The thumbnail rule
Your first image (the one visible in search results) must:
Even if your other photos are lifestyle shots, make image #1 your clean hero shot.
Building your photo template
Once you have a setup that works (light position, background, distance), write it down. Take a photo of the setup itself. Replicate it for every product. This way, all your listings look like they came from the same professional studio.
Your action
Look at your current listings as a grid. Do they look consistent? If not, identify the biggest inconsistency (background or lighting) and fix it across your top 5 listings first.
Lesson 10 Β· 5 min
A Consistent Store Look β Your Visual Brand
Open any store you admire: the photos match. Same light, same background family, same mood. That consistency is silently telling buyers "professional".
Define your look in 3 choices
Write them down. That is your style guide β total length: three lines.
Why it compounds on dapxop
Your products appear side by side on your store page, in category rows, and in ad clusters. A matching set looks like a BRAND among random photos β the eye lands on order. Buyers browse longer on consistent stores, and browsing becomes buying.
Migrating old photos
Do not reshoot everything at once. Apply the look to every NEW listing, and refresh old bestsellers one per week.
Do this today
Write your 3-line style guide. Reshoot next week's listing with it β your store's brand era starts there.
